Why are tea cups thin?

Porcelain cups typically are narrow at the bottom and widen out at the top; this enables a better balance between heat retention and expansion of the aroma of the tea.

How can you tell if food is ceramic safe?

Lead-containing glazes or decorations on the outside of dishes or non-food surfaces are generally safer to use. The only way to determine if certain crockery has lead is to test it. Home test kits can tell you ifthe dishes have leachable lead. These tests are most useful in detecting high levels of lead.

Why are tea cups called China?

It appears the first tea cups made their way to England from imports from China. These first tea cups were handle-less and were called tea bowls. And it was not until the year of 1700 did saucers appear. In about 1750 a man named Robert Adams inspired tea sets that the tea cups had handles.

What is the process of making ceramics?

Ceramics are typically produced by the application of heat upon processed clays and other natural raw materials to form a rigid product. After the particles are formed, these "green" ceramics undergo a heat-treatment (called firing or sintering) to produce a rigid, finished product.
